The Two Things Holding Me Back As A Creative
1. Perfectionism
The difference between pending and Done.
I can’t tell you how many blog drafts, unfinished videos, incomplete podcasts I have on the hard drive that all died thanks to Perfectionism.
I was always the kid who had to A+’s in grade school. I cried when I got a C+ on a math test. I tell myself that my work has to be perfect.
But really…It’s an excuse.
We are — or at least I am — hiding the fact that I’m not confident in my work.
Here’s the thing — creative work has to be put out into the world. It’s not the artist who gives it value — it’s the audience.
2. Cynicism
I love being in my little storytelling, emotional, artsy bubble where everything is traded not sold, and everyone gives us free money to go make cool videos.
And I used to hate the CHAD-bro business management guys who seemed to only care about money.
And any creative that crossed over to the dark side was another high-fiving CHAD.
That’s my pessimistic, cynical view.
And it led to a broke, bitter life.
INSTEAD…
I should’ve been looking at what these business people were doing and see where I can add my creative flavor. Where could I improve on these money-making businesses and add those ingredients into my own business?
Open yourself to a different perspective.
Don’t just look at what they’re doing - look at how they’re doing it too.
