Marketing is Bad...and so are You.
We like to believe that we are these sage, wise, unmovable forces moving from online store to online store.
No ad, no one piece of content, can sway us! And in fact, when we see an ad that falls outside our realm of “acceptable” or “superb marketing”, we cite it as ineffective.
But what if I told you that there is NO SUCH THING as bad or tasteless marketing?
Your Taste Has Nothing to Do With It
We all seem to have this six sense when it comes to marketing. We can spot a “good” ad when we see one.
My question for you: What makes a good ad?
Does good marketing use beautiful designs?
Does good marketing use modern video techniques?
Does good marketing have clever headlines and scripts?
“Good marketing” requires none of these elements.
Your sole focus should be on getting people to act.
You are manipulating people to do what you want them to do.
Nothing more.
Are you manipulative enough?
So the next time you’re swiping away on TikTok or Instagram and you see an ad that bothers you, ask yourself, “Am I doing what that marketer wants me to do?”
When you leave a comment on the video saying, “This ad is sooo annoying!” - Did that marketer want you to leave that comment?
When you tell your friends about how tacky that video was - Did that marketer want you to start that conversation with your friend?
Yes, we know...we’re the devil.
We know it’s manipulation. We know how to push your buttons.
But remember this: Pretty ads and beautiful designs aren’t what make products fly off the shelves. It’s the story, the offer, and speaking truth to someone’s problem.
That’s what moves the needle.
