I have my photography portfolio - Now what?
Here are three strategies for showing off your work...
Let’s say you have built up a pretty decent portfolio over the last few years. You’re ready to start bringing in some new clients.
Here are three strategies to keep in mind:
The Power of 3
Show off the work you want to attract
Kill Your Babies
1. The Power of 3
You only need to show off three pieces/projects to have a decent portfolio. It seems counterintuitive but really hold fast to this idea that less is more. Three pieces are enough to show the client your consistency and your style.
It seems like a really attractive idea to stack your portfolio site full of links, videos, gallery after gallery. You want to seem like you have this huge resume of past work and flaunt that you have dozens of clients. What ends up happening is your prospect 1) gets overwhelmed, and 2) can’t tell which project is your “best” work.
Any more than three is fluff.
Leave a little to be desired. Pique their curiosity.
2. You Reap What You Sow
If you’re looking to attract more commercial photography clients, then you’ll need to place commercial photography projects front and center. Whether it’s how you structure your website or building the “top 9” of your Instagram profile - when a commercial client (in this example) visits your site they should only see your top three commercial projects.
3. Kill Your Babies
I have done some beautiful work in the past that you’ll never see. I’m sure you have some pure gold buried in your portfolio that you are dying to show someone. If it isn’t relevant to your prospective clients, then keep that shit to yourself.
I’m sure you have this amazing first-kiss, sunset wedding photo up your sleeve, but your CrossFit gym client couldn’t care less. Sorry, not sorry. Kill your babies.
Post a link to your photography portfolio in the comments! 💬
