π The 3 Hard and Fast Phone Hacks That'll Unf*ck Your Creativity
As content creators, we are handcuffed to the iPhone...
As content creators, we are handcuffed to the iPhone.
When our creative jobs depend on creative and social apps, it becomes a zero chance that we will switch over to phones like the Nokia or the meme-able Light Phone.
But, scrolling on these social apps becomes a drain on our creativity to the point that we lose the delicate balance of being creators vs. consumers.
So, here are 3 Hacks Thatβll Give You Your Creative Time Back:
1) Freedom App (Free & Paid) π¦
Go ahead and buy the lifetime membership. We're not here to cut corners on your creative success.
Freedom is the master app-blocking, wifi-killing machine that will override your dirty little habits of mindlessly scrolling.
John Cleese famously espouses the power of giving your creative brain time - loads of time. In a 90-minute block, he proposes that you'll need at least 30 minutes of run-up time.
That means 30 minutes of you doing nothing.
And that 90-minute cycle breaks the moment you unconsciously check Twitter. Check Bitcoin. And then check Bitcoin again. (Did it go back up, again? Let me know in the comments.)
Your Phone Becomes a Useless Piece of Plastic (and I love it)
I even have set recurring "Freedom" moments in the morning between 6AM-9AM. This blocks me from the bedside scroll.
If I can't scroll, then I'm getting the f*ck up.
Also, set a nightly schedule.
For me, it's 9PM to Midnight.
Wind down. Read a book. Stare deeply into your wife's eyes.
2) iOS Focus Mode (Free) π
Remove the cue. Kill the craving.
James Clearβs βAtomic Habits,β lays out the four stages of habits (good or bad):
Cue. Craving. Response. Reward.
The new Focus Mode on iOS can help you remove the cue of that addictive app, thus killing the cycle at the beginning.
This method takes a little tinkering, but once built, I immediately could feel my brain re-wiring.
Essentially, you are creating rooms in your digital space.
You can create a room from scratch, and so the next question is...
What do you want in this room when you're working?
Your Answer: Not much.
Create a room for sleep.
Create a room for work.
Create a room for deep work, and
Set these rooms to an automatic timer.
3) The Nuclear Option (Free) β’οΈ
When I was trying to break up with alcohol, I thought I could simply "cut back".
Instead of drinking 4-5 on a Friday, I'll βspace it out.β
4-5 over the entire week. Big Brain Jordie.
The sad fact, I was still an alcoholic, but now I was a cute alcoholic.
Day 5 of Jen Sincero's "Badass Habits" readsβ¦
REFUSE TO PARTICIPATE IN NEGOTIATIONS
Sometimes you just have to punch in the launch codes and fire that intercontinental missile at your phone.
Delete the f*cking app.
And don't re-download it 6 days later when you break like a twig.
Play Yourself
So, these three methods can be used individually, but to get the compound effect, use all three on a daily basis.
If you know yourself, you can play yourself.
